VECF Awards Booster Funds to Support Local Early Childhood Initiative
Richmond, VA (February 2011) – The Virginia Early Childhood Foundation (VECF), in conjunction with the Office of Early Childhood Development, has awarded $17,950 in supplementary Virginia Star Quality Initiative booster funds to Smart Beginnings Western Tidewater through the City of Franklin.
The funds are specified for early childhood development projects to expand the Virginia Star Quality Initiative (VSQI) in the local area during the period of January-June 2011. VSQI is a voluntary program that assesses, improves and communicates the level of quality in early care and education settings.
Funds for this project are from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The VECF designated $250,000 as “booster funds” to support the statewide Smart Beginnings initiatives investing in growth and sustainability of the VSQI. Twelve communities around the state were selected to receive the one-time booster funds of varying amounts, based on the proposed activities and other criteria.
“We are impressed with local efforts to support and enhance the quality of childcare in Virginia communities,” said Mylinda Moore, MSW, Senior Program Officer with the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation. “These booster funds were awarded as a supplement to an existing VECF grant to Smart Beginnings Western Tidewater. We are excited to offer additional funds to support innovative school readiness programs and services that will help the region’s young children be successful in school and in life.”
Smart Beginnings Western Tidewater serves the City of Franklin, as well as Isle of Wight and Southampton Counties. For more information, contact Ellen Couch, Executive Director, at

Smart Beginnings Western Tidewater was recently awarded a Making Healthy Connections grant through the Obici Foundation. The purpose of the Making Healthy Connections program is to increase the number of children (ages 0-5) who are enrolled in healthcare across Western Tidewater. According to Kids Count Data Center, approximately 13% of the children in Western Tidewater are not insured. There is a great need to insure these children to get the medical care and services necessary so that when they enter school, they have the needed medical services and inoculations to be healthy and ready to learn! This will help them be successful in school and in life! |
