SBWT is currently working on various projects that include:

  • QRIS (Quality Rating and Improvement System)- is an evidence based practice that was implemented in Virginia in 2008. In Western Tidewater, local early care and education centers, Head Start, and all three local school divisions participate in QRIS. The QRIS program has assisted preschool providers with additional resources, training, skills and mentoring to improve the quality of their individual programs. We are continuously expanding the QRIS program by adding additional centers. Quality trained mentors work with each center once a star rating has been awarded.
  • The ABC (Advancing Behavioral Competencies Project) collaboration is between the Children's Center, PDCCC, The Planning Council and Smart Beginnings Western Tidewater. This collaboration will provide assistance to parents and childcare providers in the area of social-emotional development of children ages birth-3.
  • Insuring more children and pregnant mothers in Medicaid or FAMIS programs is a new project that Smart Beginnings Western Tidewater is working in collaboration with the Obici Healthcare Foundation.
  • Raising a Reader is a literacy program that targets children and their families who may not have access to books in the home. The RAR program is being expanded through the efforts of the Blackwater Regional Library.

Data is collected from the various projects and programs. This data is not only analyzed within the Smart Beginnings office, but with the Smart Beginnings Collaboration, the Board of Directors, local government officials, and the community.
